I have had an idea for a segment for a while but never really got around to doing some test examples of it. So, before I start it, I thought I would throw out the idea of it and see what you say about it, see if it is something you think the listenerbase would participate in.
Where I live, Sweden, we have a saturday morning radioshow called Melodikrysset which is hosted by the same guy for the last 20-or-so years. Basicly, it is a crossword pussle, where the questions are announced on radio and the questions always have something to do with a song or melody.
It can be things like "On number 4 horizontally, 5 letters, you enter the last name of the singer in this next song." or "On number 12 vertically, enter the name of the person who wrote this piece in it's original form" and the host then play a song, which with the later example could be a cover or a remix.
The songs can vary a LOT. It can be from the latest Eurovision Song Contest, it can be from a musical, it can be from the 50's or even something from Bach.
The listeners can then send in their results and in the show the next week he present the correct answers and also a few winners.
Yes, it is fully possible for people to just search on the web for the answers but it is a sport to try to do it on your own as much as you can.
This is what the crossword would look like (this weeks crossword):

My question is then, is this something that you think the radio KoL listeners would like and enjoy? Is this asking for to much participation from the listeners?
It would also be hard to make it so "every" RadioKoL listener could participate, as myself I would not really know what kind of music everyone listen to in their countries and what is a familiar song to me in the EU might not be to you in the US.
This could be solved by having a Musical quiz one week, a 70's quiz the next, and so on. That, coupled with people being allowed to search the web for songs, should allow everyone to get a decent chance to get the right answers and win.
To go through all the replies will be hell, I realize that, and even to find out a good way to send it in (the swedish show have a Flash-script on their webbpage that allow you to send in the correct answer via the webb. It look like this http://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?FormatId=108&ProgramId=2078&Artikel=723047).
The show is ususally about an hour (including a newscast but no commercials) and can have around 15 questions. Coupled with 3-4min songs for each question, there is quite enough free time for the listeners anyway.
I realize that there are quite a few obstacles, but I just wonder what you guys, gals and DJs think about it. |
