I have written a Firefox extension that displays the song/band/number of users/DJ in the lower right hand corner of your browser windows. You'll never have to wonder what is playing again!

This extension works on both Windows and Mac under Firefox 1.5 to 9.0

This page has more information and screenshots. Check it out.

Yeah Grinder, this is a most excellent extension!

Any chance you could contact me and share some details about it? I've wanted to learn to write extensions for a while, and I learn best by example.

It is worth noting that I have never uninstalled the old one before installing the new one.

It seems Firefox is pretty clever and just recognises the new version as an upgrade and acts accordingly.

I just choose OPEN FILE (with Firefox) straight from your site. Don't even have to download it.

I am working on version 1.5. So far I have the following changes in mind:

1. Changes to support Firefox 2.0
2. Using the links in the option menu should open the new page in a separate tab of the current window instead of spawning a new window.

I am looking for more suggestions. Please post them here.

Thank you,
Grinder

Ok, keeping in mind that I have no idea how hard this is, and if it is impossible, just say "no"

Can we have an "enable popup display only" that disables the bar display but has two lines in the popup display, one for the listener/DJ info and one for the song info?

The bar sometimes breaks the KOL item info windows, so I disable it sometimes when I'm playing in the kingdom. But I'd like the popup info to still be available.

And a link to the forums included would be nice, but I can add that in with your whizzy URL adder, so no worries on that one.

Oh God Love This.

How about double clicking on it takes you to the DJ's page.

"Inhibit display and put everything in the tooltip"

I need to find a way around the "one line" limitation that tooltips have in Firefox. If you try to put a return character or anything similar into a tooltip it is ignored.

For right now, I am working on a feature to inhibit the functionality of the extension in small, pop-up windows (like the ones used for item info in KOL).

"How about double clicking on it takes you to the DJ's page"
I can do this, but I would have to hard code in some sort of table that maps the DJ show names or the DJ Aim names to the web site pages. This means that the extension would have to be updated whenever a new DJ is hired or whenever a DJ changes their show or AIM info.

However, there is a great way around this. Since the radio-kol.net web page always knows which dj is on the air, a page could be set up on radio-kol.net that always forwards to the DJ homepage. That way, a double-click in the extension would always take you to the right place.
This would put some burden on the person responsible for coding the radio-kol wiki.

The Wiki pages are updated by anyone and everyone.

The actual code of the wiki... well, I've not really gotten into modding it like that.

It would have to be a stand-alone 'module' for the wiki (like the radio update is) I'll have to think about if and how that might happen. And learn how to set "bot" for wiki edits so it doesn't clutter the "last changed" with DJ updates.

Fnord, master coder, suggested an interesting THIRD option.

If we set up a (protected) Wiki page that contains mappings for "AIM Info" to DJ Name you could simply parse that page (we'd agree a format) and it could be kept up to date by the DJs.

It might also be possible for Fnord to use said page for Chatbot, eliminating the "You must always tell Fnord when you update your AIM Stream information" *and* you could use it for the Last Played page as well.

Thoughts? How comfortable are you at parsing HTML pages? Pretty darn comfortable I'd expect, given the awesomeness of the "Last Played" page.
