How about a thread for us old guys? IMHO the best rock music ever recorded comes from Led Zeppelin. I may not be the most objective person when it comes to Zep's music however...I grew up being spoonfed Led Zeppelin and many other of the rock classics. Zeppelin's amazing ability to combine musical genre, instuments (know of many other classic rock bands who used banjo and mandolin??), texture and dynamics still blows me away to this day. And DAMN could they play the blues! The heavy influence of Delta Blues gave this young British group a flavor that was fairly unique...but their delivery set them apart. Four of the most talented musicians and stage performers ever assembled Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham have been my favorites all of my life. I don't see it changing.

You don't need to be an old guy to appreciate classic rock, Toe. (; I'm 18 myself - thus missed out on many of the classic rock greats during their prime - but I still love them. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi, The Who, The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors... gah, could go on and on. Certainly my favorite genre. (:

And, as one of the resident old guys here, I'll give some love to the progressive rock bands -- Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

I like Led Zeppelin, but they got so over-played on commercial radio that I got sick of some of their songs. I prefer hearing the deeper cuts, stuff that didn't get played a million times a day on the radio.

(btw, this topic has the potential to be a re-hash of the "What music to you like" thread in General)

I have to say I agree that a LOT of Zep's stuff got WAY overplayed! Like you I prefer the deep cuts and unreleased stuff that we havent heard a zillion times. And I also have to throw my hat in the ring with the progressive stuff. We didnt listen to a lot of Genesis when I was growing up, but Floyd and ELP played a lot. In fact Brain Salad Surgery was one of my favorites. Perhaps we should include King Crimson in that progressive list as well?

Peace,
Toe

Absolutely! Although I have to admit that I've not heard enough King Crimson to speak with any authority on them.

So, when's the next All-Progressive Rock show? :)

Floyd was something I was spoonfed, as well. My dad started me out on quite the number of choice groups of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The 90s I kind of worked on my self.

Dark Side of the Moon is still my favorite. A few other strange classics are still my favorite, including stuff like Golden Earring, The Who, and (a bit later) Queen.

Yeah, old stuff is where it's at.

Dark Side is a prime example of those albums that was great, but got run into the ground with overplaying. That, and The Wall. I can't really stand to listen to anything off of those albums anymore. However, I did recently pull out albums like Umagumma, Animals, and Meddle, and remembered how much I enjoyed them. If you haven't listened to those albums in a while, they're worth revisiting.

Overplaying by who? The radio? I never listened to the radio. I have no concept of what has been far too overplayed.... aside from... cough... Stairway.

Well, back in my day, when the whole family would gather 'round the wireless...

Yeah, commercial radio. That's why the Sirius Satellite radio I bought a year ago is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Now, if RKoL could just get a stream on it...

I looove grateful dead, and im 14. is that weird? Im also in to zeppelin (as everyone else, i listen more to the non-overplayed stuff) the who, nirvana, ac/dc and floyd. I just got the Final Cut actually. I really have no clue as to how people listen soley to new crap. I like some new bands, such as state radio and dispatch, but theyre among the only new bands i listen to.... ever. I completely missed out on the 60's 70's 80's and 90's.. Well, peace

Unlike, y'know, Sabbath, Hendrix or Cream.

I know someone who doesn't listen to music made before 1986 (or 1987, I can't quite remember) because he believes that it is more important to support new music being made, rather than listening to the same records over and over again for fourty years, and I really doubt he would describe the music he listens to as "crap", mon homme.

Personally, I'm in both camps. I'll support new music whilst wearing my Pink Floyd t-shirt.
